Multiletramentos e (re)inclusão social : convergências entre o cânone shakespeariano e a telenovela na formação crítica do leitor da terceira idade via tradução

The aim of this research is to examine the likelihood of critical formation among third age readers based on the triad multiliteracies/agency/(re)inclusion through translation. The discipline Literatura em língua inglesa e multimodalidades: Shakespeare e a telenovela (Literature in English language and multimodalities: Shakespeare and the soap opera), was, then, proposed at Universidade da Terceira Idade (University of the Third Age) in order to discuss and question the circulation of the play The Taming of the Shrew, by William Shakespeare and translated into Portuguese by Alex Marins, in the soap opera O Cravo e a Rosa, produced by Rede Globo. The research also aimed to verify how the reception of this circulation by the third age students was. During the classes, this group of students started a blog which mediated their agency and participation in the classroom, once they posted their personal experiences with the Shakespearean text and the discipline. The hypotheses confirmed that: 1) it is possible to form critical readers in the third age; 2) third age students hold a positive opinion in relation to intersemiotic translation from literature to soap opera; 3) third age students can become agents. The results show that agency in the third age may be developed in literature classes by means of discussions about the different forms of literature circulation. In addition to that, this experience revealed that multiliteracies are a valuable vehicle for this social group as it allowed them to develop their agency in the virtual community and in society as a whole. With regard to convergence culture, critical formation through translation and digital (re)inclusion in the third age also plays an important role in their access to arts and culture.
