Violence and social rejection at school: their effects in indigenous student

Resumo: This study focused on the analysis of the different expressions of violence and ethnical and social rejectionbehavior in traditional urban schools towards indigenous students. The methodology used is qualitative anddescriptive. The sample is formed by male and female students from urban high schools with a high amountof indigenous students in Chile. The techniques used were focus groups and semi-structured interviews anddata analysis was carried out using the theoretical and methodological aspects of the grounded theory. TheATLAS-ti software was used to generate networks, concepts and categories. In the results, this studyconfirmed the existence of different types of violence, verbal, physical and psychological, towards indigenousstudents at traditional urban schools being the most typical ones verbal and psychological. The results showthat verbal violence is represented mainly in expressions aimed at ridiculing, making stereotyped offenses anddepreciation of indigenous students. The main expressions of psychological violence are represented in processes that communicate apathy, despise and social exclusion. The findings of this study show the urgent necessity of moving forward, in urban schools with a high amount of indigenous students, towards the principles of an intercultural education which is able to value cultural diversity in the classrooms.

La metodología utilizada es cualitativa ydescriptiva, la muestra estuvo compuesta por alumnos y alumnas de establecimientos secundarios urbanoscon alta población indígena en Chile. Se utilizó las técnicas de grupo focal y entrevistas semiestructuradas, yel análisis de los datos se realizó mediante los aspectos teóricos metodológicos de la Teoría Fundamentada,con apoyo del programa ATLAS-ti, para generar redes, conceptos y categorías. Entre sus resultados elestudio verificó la existencia de formas de violencia verbal, física y psicológica hacia los estudiantesindígenas en la escuela urbana tradicional, siendo más frecuentes las formas de violencia verbal y psicológica.Los resultados muestran que las formas de violencia verbal se representan principalmente en expresiones deridiculización, ofensas estereotipadas y expresiones de desvalorización hacia los estudiantes indígenas. Lasprincipales formas de violencia psicológica constatadas se representan en procesos que comunican apatía,menosprecio y exclusión social.
