Resumo: During the twentieth century there was a sharp increase in education at different educational levels in Chile. The main concern of the State for education came from the beginnings of the Republic (1810 onwards), but it was increased by the democratizing educational ideas of Dewey that Dario Salas brought to the country in the first decade. That thought was given by the prevailing secularist trend including the educators Amanda Labarca and Irma Salas. They focused on High School education (Liceo) mainly in the first half of the century, and in the same way in the second half of the century, Mabel Condemarín contributions were remarkable and she followed Dewey´s disciples (Tyler y Bloom) and focused on the first levels of primary school and special education.

Esta mayor preocupación del estado por la educación venía desde los comienzos de la República (1810 en adelante), pero se vio incrementada por las ideas pedagógicas democratizadoras de Dewey que trajo Darío Salas al país en La primera década.
