Italian ethnic community schools in Rio Grande do Sul: between the rural and urban milieu (1875 - 1914)

Resumo: Current paper is the partial result of a research, funded by CNPq, on the History of the Italian Ethnic Community Schools inBrazil (1875-1945). Investigating and mapping school organizations established by Italian immigrants in the state ofRio Grande doSul,Brazil, the text was built on Cultural History Studies and methodically processed by documental analysis, especially consular reports, documents of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Relations, newspapers, photographs and others. Several school initiatives may be found in different regions ofRio Grande do Sul, occupied by Italian immigrants or their descendants. Many were only temporary procedures and all were poorly systematized, albeit significant. They were different when installed in urban or rural areas. Moreover, they reveal the singularities and specific understanding of the importance of schooling. Since they were spaces for the constitution of Italian identity, Catholicity or even just for simply learning to read, write and calculate, it was an important educational space within the State´s scenario of the period.

Investigando y haciendo el mapeo de las organizaciones escolares creadas por los inmigrantes en el territorio gaucho, el texto fue construido considerando como referencial teórico las premisas dela Historia Cultural y metodológicamente se procedió el análisis documental, especialmente de informes de cónsules, documentos del Ministerio de las Relaciones Exteriores de Italia, periódicos, fotografías, entre otros. Encontramos, en diferentes espacios de Rio Grande do Sul, ocupados por inmigrantes italianos o descendientes, iniciativas escolares. Fugaces, temporarias y poco sistematizadas en su mayoría, aunque presentes. Diferentes cuando instaladas en áreas urbanas o rurales. Revelan las singularidades y los modos propios de comprender la importancia de la escolarización. Como espacios de constitución de la italianidad, de la catolicidad o sólo para la propagación de los rudimentos del leer, del escribir y del calcular, fueron espacios educativos importantes para el escenario gaucho de la época. O presente texto é resultado parcial da pesquisa História das Escolas Étnico-Comunitárias Italianas no Brasil (1875-1945), financiada pelo CNPq. Investigando e mapeando as organizações escolares criadas pelos imigrantes no território gaúcho, o texto foi construído considerando como referencial teórico os pressupostos da História Cultural e metodologicamente procedeu-se a análise documental, especialmente de relatórios de cônsules, documentos do Ministério das Relações Exteriores da Itália, jornais, fotografias, dentre outros. Encontramos, em diferentes espaços do Rio Grande do Sul, ocupados por imigrantes italianos ou descendentes, iniciativas escolares. Fugazes, temporárias e pouco sistematizadas em sua maioria. Mas presentes. Diferentes quando instaladas em áreas urbanas ou rurais. Revelam as singularidades e os modos próprios de compreender a importância da escolarização.
