Biography and cinema in History of Education: aspects of the teaching profession in the movie movie ‘Saint John Baptist de La Salle: patron saint of teachers’

Resumo: This article discusses, based on the movie mentioned, paths of the teaching profession in the 17th century, highlighting the presence of the Catholic Church in this scenario and the simultaneous method used by The Brothers of the Christian Schools congregation. We seek to think the film as a source and object for the History of Education, considering its educational potential and the uses that have been made of this type of media by different groups and social actors. As the film is a biography, this concept as well as that of representation became the basis for thinking, from the life of a subject, about issues, processes, articulation, networks, tensions and disputes at stake in the French educational scenario in the 17th century. This discussion emphasizes the relationship between religion, media and education, which became procounced in Modernity, with media such as books, magazines, newspapers, radio, cinema, television and, today, the Internet. This movie production is therefore indicative of the position the Church has established and is still assuming with the cinema, not only being resistant, but using it pedagogically for its far-reaching potential in people formation.

El objetivo es pensar la película como fuente y objeto para la Historia de la Educación, teniendo en cuenta sus potencialidades educativas y los usos de ese tipo de prensa por distintos grupos y actores sociales. La película que vamos a abordar es una biografía y, por eso, tanto este concepto como el de la representación se hacen fundamentales para plantear, desde la vida de un sujeto, cuestiones, procesos, articulación, redes, tensiones y disputas que se involucraron en el escenario educacional francés del siglo XVII. La discusión enfatiza la relación entre la religión, los medios de comunicación y la educación, que se acentuó desde la Modernidad por medio de soportes como el libro, la revista, los periódicos, el radio, el cine, la televisión y, hoy día, la internet. La producción de la obra indica, por lo tanto, la posición que la Iglesia ha establecido y sigue estableciendo frente al cine, no sólo de modo refractario pero, a la vez, utilizándolo pedagógicamente por su potencial formativo de largo alcance.Este artigo aborda, a partir do filme São João Batista de La Salle: padroeiro dos professores, os caminhos da profissão docente no século XVII, destacando a presença da Igreja nesse cenário e o método simultâneo utilizado pela congregação dos Irmãos das Escolas Cristãs. Temos como objetivo pensar o filme como fonte e objeto para a História da Educação, considerando suas potencialidades educativas e os usos que foram feitos desse tipo de mídia por diferentes grupos e atores sociais. Como o filme aqui abordado trata-se de uma biografia, este conceito, assim como o de representação, tornaram-se basilares no trabalho para pensar, a partir da vida de um sujeito, questões, processos, articulação, redes, tensões e disputas que estavam em jogo no cenário educacional francês no século XVII. A discussão põe em evidência a relação entre religião, mídia e educação que ganhou acento a partir da Modernidade, com suportes como o livro, revista, jornais, rádio, cinema, tv e, hoje, a internet.
