German schools in Santa Catarina and their transformation into teuto-brazilian schools: an historical analysis

Resumo: Current research investigates the establishment of educational institutions in the wake of European migration toBrazil. The study focuses on the rise and on the transformations of schools in the German immigration settlement area in Santa Catarina between 1897 and 1930. Research is based on such documents as the reports of the Hanseatic Colonization Company, legislation and published material. Results indicated that the emergence of schools was due to the initiative of the immigrants and to the settlement company involved. The schools’ pedagogical characterization was marked by a European curriculum and use of German. Gradually another type of formation started replacing the older one. It was focused on regionalism and the compulsory use of the Portuguese language. The condition of German schools based on ethnic-oriented social relations linked to German-European culture were being oriented to teaching ideas based on technology and on the Brazilian government´s guidelines for more Brazilian-directed features that eventually generated a new identity, or rather, a German-Brazilian identity.

El estudio enfoca el surgimiento y algunas transformaciones por las que pasaron escuelas en zona colonial catarinense de inmigración alemana, entre 1897 y1930. Ha sido basado en investigación documental: informes dela Compañía Colonizadora Hanseática, legislación y prensa. Los resultados indican que el surgimiento de las escuelas es debido tanto a la iniciativa de los que llegaron como a la subvención de la colonizadora. Su caracterización pedagógica fue marcada por un currículo europeo y el uso del idioma alemán. Pero fue tomando el lugar, gradualmente, otra formación centrada en regionalismos y en la compulsoria utilización del portugués. De la condición de escuelas alemanas de aspecto étnico, fundado en relaciones sociales vinculadas a la cultura teuto-europea, fueron siendo orientadas a una enseñanza bajo la racionalidad técnica y el ideario gubernamental de volverse brasileñas que las acuñó bajo una nueva identidad: la teuto-brasileña. Dedicamo-nos a investigar a criação de instituições escolares no movimento de migração europeia para o Brasil. O estudo foca o surgimento e algumas transformações por que passaram escolas em zona colonial catarinense de imigração alemã, entre 1897 e 1930. É embasado em pesquisa documental: relatórios da Companhia Colonizadora Hanseática, legislação e imprensa. Os resultados indicam que o surgimento das escolas é devido tanto à iniciativa dos chegados como à subvenção da colonizadora. Sua caracterização pedagógica foi marcada por um currículo europeu e uso do idioma alemão. Mas, gradativamente, foi tomando lugar outra formação centrada em regionalismos e na compulsória utilização do português.
