Resumo: | The Order of Preachers, which emerged in the early decades of the thirteenth century, was engaged throughout the period in the formation of a model characterized by studies as its main basis. The process was characterized by clashes within and outside the Order, specifically comprising practices related to education and study. Current investigation demonstrates how censorship directed to the very thing that gave legitimacy to the Order and to scholarship reinforced its identity. Certain instrumental concepts, such as the notions of identity and censorship and the ideas on freedom and power, were investigated. Content analysis was undertaken by crossing official documents and the minutes of the General and Provincial Chapters so that the relationship between the several instances of power within the Dominican order could be understood. The contextualization of these documents within a broader intellectual scenario, especially within the university milieu of the 13th century, could be established. Results showed that censorship worked as an identity tool even though what was censored and the intensity of censorship varied according to a greater or lesser need for institutionalization and consequently the demarcation of the Order of Preachers´ identity. |

A Ordem dos Pregadores, surgida nas décadas iniciais do século XIII, se engajou ao longo de todo aquele período, na formação de um modelo de si mesma que tinha como principal elemento os estudos. Esse processo foi marcado por embates internos e externos à Ordem, abrangendo não somente, mas, sobretudo, práticas vinculadas à educação e ao estudo. Neste artigo demonstram como a censura direcionada ao próprio aspecto que confere legitimidade à Ordem e à erudição, reforça sua identidade. Para tanto, lançamos mão de alguns conceitos instrumentais para a nossa análise: evidentemente as noções de identidade e censura, mas também, secundariamente, as ideias de liberdade e poder. Nos concentramos na análise de conteúdo realizada por meio do cruzamento de documentos oficiais e nas atas dos Capítulos Gerais e provinciais, para entender a relação entre as várias instâncias de poder internas à Ordem. Valemo-nos igualmente da contextualização daquilo que estes documentos estabeleciam em relação ao cenário intelectual mais amplo, notadamente o cenário universitário do século XIII. Concluímos que, de modo geral, a censura funcionou como uma ferramenta de identidade, muito embora o que se censurava e sua intensidade variasse de acordo com a maior ou menor necessidade de institucionalização e, consequentemente, demarcação da identidade e da Ordem dos Pregadores.
