Italian schools in Minas Gerais: organization, curriculum and social relations

Resumo: Current research discusses the organization of Italian schools (private or linked to charities) by their circumstances and curricula. The immigration phenomenon in Minas Gerais brought a large population of Italian immigrants on whose experience several schools were founded in some towns of the state of Minas Gerais,Brazil. Current essay investigates the common and differentiating factors of Italian Schools in the state? Documentary sources were analyzed on the organization of the following schools: Italian School linked to the Italian Beneficent Association in Belo Horizonte, and the schools Regina Margherita and Umberto Primo in Juiz de For a. The Umberto Primo school was associated to the Italian Society Umberto Primo and the Italian school Dante Alighieri was associated to the Società Dante Alighieri in Ouro Fino andUmbertoPrimoSchool in Nova Lima, linked to the Società Italiana of this town between 1899 and 1911. Current analysis contributes towards the clarification of similarities and differentiations on the organization of Italian Schools, and, inevitably, to the understanding of the schooling of immigrants in Minas Gerais.

El fenómeno de la inmigración para Minas Gerais ha traído un gran contingente de inmigrantes italianos que, entre otros hechos, crearon escuelas en varias ciudades mineras. Nuestra cuestión es: ¿cuáles elementos eran comunes y cuáles eran diferenciadores en las escuelas italianas en Minas Gerais? Para contestarla, analizamos fuentes documentales, del período de1899 a 1911, sobre la organización de las siguientes escuelas: escuela italiana vinculada ala Società Italiana de Belo Horizonte, la escuela Regina Margherita y la escuela Umberto Primo, en Juiz de Fora (siendo la última vinculada ala Società Italiana Umberto Primo), la escuela italiana Dante Alighieri, vinculada ala Società Dante Alighieri de Ouro Fino y la escuela Umberto Primo, en Nova Lima, también vinculada ala Società Italiana de esta ciudad. Este estudio contribuye para el esclarecimiento de proximidades y diferenciaciones sobre la organización de las escuelas italianas e, inevitablemente, para la comprensión de la escolarización de los inmigrantes en Minas Gerais. O objetivo deste artigo é discutir a organização das escolas italianas (particulares ou vinculadas a Associações Beneficentes) a partir de suas circunstâncias e de seus currículos. O fenômeno da imigração para Minas Gerais trouxe um grande contingente de imigrantes italianos que, entre outros feitos, criaram escolas em vários municípios mineiros. A nossa indagação é:  quais elementos eram comuns e quais eram diferenciadores nas escolas italianasem Minas Gerais? Para respondê-la, analisamos fontes documentais, do período de1899 a1911, sobre a organização das seguintes escolas: escola italiana vinculada à Società Italiana de Belo Horizonte, a escola Regina Margherita e a escola Umberto Primo, em Juiz de Fora (sendo a última vinculada à Società Italiana Umberto Primo), a escola italiana Dante Alighieri, vinculada à Società Dante Alighieri de Ouro Fino e a escola Umberto Primo,em Nova Lima, também vinculada à Società Italiana desta cidade.
