Resumo: The modern ecology meaning understands the people and the society as part of the nature. In Brazil, that conception is still far away from our reality. Traditional populations are expelled of their habitat, to favor the political power of the groups economical. Usually, that exclusion is justified by the idea of preservation of the habitat and reduction of environmental impacts. We studied the relationships of a population of close resident islanders to the Paraná river, inhabitants of a Protected Area (APA). We utilized questionnaires to obtain information as for the social and economical aspects of the remaining group. Five islands of Paraná river close of the cities of Porto Rico, Querência do Norte and São Pedro do Paraná were visited. The results obtained in 2005 demonstrated that the survival strategies of the islanders are subsistence agriculture and the fishing. However, in APA das Ilhas e Várzeas do rio Paraná, those two manners of local survival are being made unfeasible by the fiscalization of the responsible organs by the execution of the Brazilian environmental politics. The low income obtained in their activities allied to the countless restrictions of the use of the earth contributes for the decimation of his culture.

Universidade Estadual De Maringá2008-05-29info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttp://www.periodicos.uem.br/ojs/index.php/ActaSciBiolSci/article/view/363910.4025/actascibiolsci.v30i2.3639Acta Scientiarum.
