Resumo: This articles aims at analyzing the short story “Folha rota” (1878) of Machado de Assis it is focused on some aspects of Brazilian social structure in the nineteenth-century. Through his works, the writer does important critic of patriarchy of that society, showing free and poor women’s everyday life involved in symbolical violence situations. In this perspective, we intent to contribute to comprehend the violence present in the power relations in the patriarchal family context, as much as to interpret the literature as an important device of social critical. Furthermore, we would like to give a contribution to a better comprehension of Machado de Assis’s work.

Pautamo-nos na representação que a narrativa faz do cotidiano das personagens femininas para discutir as situações de violência vividas por mulheres livres e pobres envolvidas nas relações de poder inerentes àquela sociedade.
