Resumo: | This article discusses the reading practices in primary education, having as presupposition the discursive conception of reading. This work aims at presenting a diagnosis of the reading competence of students in the final grades of the primary level schooling, in the municipality of Irati, in the state of Paraná, with the objective of contributing to a critical reflection about the quality of reading of these students. Thus, questionnaires devised on reading, applied from the fourth to the eight grade of primary education, were described and analyzed. The results show that the majority of the students, mainly the ones from lower social classes, do not achieve good performance in reading. This finding is worrying, considering that the bad performance in reading interferes in all the curricular activities, affecting the textual production and the establishment of relations among the learned contents. Key-words:O artigo discute as práticas leitoras no ensino fundamental, tendo-se como pressuposto a concepção interacionista-discursiva de leitura. Objetiva-se apresentar um diagnóstico da competência leitora de alunos em séries finais de ciclo, atendidos no município de Irati-Paraná, a fim de contribuir com uma reflexão crítica acerca da qualidade de leitura desses alunos. Para tanto, descrevem-se e analisam-se questionários de leitura aplicados a alunos de 4ª e 8ª séries do ensino fundamental . Os resultados apontam que a maioria dos alunos, principalmente os de classes sociais menos favorecidas, não apresenta bom desempenho na leitura. A constatação dessa realidade é preocupante, pois o mau desempenho na leitura interfere em todas as atividades curriculares, comprometendo a produção textual e o estabelecimento de relações entre os conteúdos aprendidos.
