Recent regional economic dynamics in the State of Paraná, Brazil, and its prospects: diversification, re-concentration risk and productive specialization

Current paper evidences the changes which occurred in the economy of the state of Paraná, Brazil, as from the decentralization process of the regional productive structure and the integration of Brazilian economy. Changes in its inclusion on the national market are underscored whether it is predominantly the producer of non-durable consumer goods and intermediate goods or whether in the production of capital goods and durable consumer goods. Research outlines some of the most striking features of the industrial development of the Paraná from the mid-1980s up to the present. Results show that industrialization promoted by the state from the expansive cycle of the 1970s and more recently in the 1990s which provided greater diversification of the economy of the state of Paraná, especially towards consumer durables and capital goods, especially metal mechanical factories. However, this process is less intense in most of its meso-regions although a trend towards greater specialization is not indicated.
