Resumo: | Based on an interdisciplinary perspective, current essay discusses products´ life-cycle, use of technology and globalization within the backdrop of José Saramago´s The Cave, published in Brazil in 2001. The novel written as a parable narrates the saga of a family of entrepreneurs which, through the Algores Pottery, has been offering crockery to the market for three generation. However, at some time in the story, the potters are informed that there is no demand anymore for the ceramic products produced and offered by them. In an attempt to survive, the potters start manufacturing clay dolls for decoration purposes. However, the initiative is not well received by the consumers. The impact of technology in the production of goods, whose spread has been facilitated by globalization, and the lack of the potters´ awareness on the changes in the consumer market, were crucial to its bankruptcy and forced them to redirect their lives. Current essay, therefore, addresses a subject which is directly related to organizations, marketing activity and contemporary society. |

Dentro de uma perspectiva interdisciplinar, este ensaio tem o propósito de discutir o ciclo de vida dos produtos, a utilização de tecnologia e a globalização, tendo como pano de fundo o livro A Caverna de José Saramago, que foi publicado no Brasil no ano de 2001. A obra é um romance em forma de parábola e trata da saga de uma família de empreendedores que, através da Olaria dos Algores, fornece louças de barro ao mercado consumidor há três gerações. Entretanto, em determinado momento, os oleiros são informados que não existe mais demanda para os produtos cerâmicos por eles produzidos e oferecidos. Na tentativa de dar sobrevida à atividade, iniciam a confecção de bonecos de barro destinados à decoração, todavia estes também não são bem recebidos pelo público consumidor. O impacto da utilização de tecnologia na produção de produtos, cuja disseminação foi facilitada pela globalização, bem como a falta de percepção da Olaria sobre as mudanças ocorridas no mercado consumidor, foram determinantes para sua falência, obrigando os seus proprietários a redirecionarem suas vidas. Trata-se, portanto, de um ensaio que aborda uma temática que está diretamente relacionada às organizações, à atividade de marketing e à sociedade contemporânea.
