Resumo: My main purpose in this paper is to demonstrate that for Saint Augustine the human will become truly free by a paradoxical process, that is, by being submitted to the True [Veritas]. That process occurs only by means of the help of divine grace. To the Bishop of Hippo, liberum arbitrium and grace are not contradictory forces but work together in the process of conducting the will back to God. To discuss that, I took into account mainly the polemic texts wrote by the Saint against Pelagio (the texts about Grace). The result of that controversial is that Augustine completely reversed the Pelagian ideas, defending the insufficiency of human will to help us to return to God, and the necessary work of divine grace for our restoration to freedom [libertas vera].

The result of that controversial is that Augustine completely reversed the Pelagian ideas, defending the insufficiency of human will to help us to return to God, and the necessary work of divine grace for our restoration to freedom [libertas vera]. Meu objetivo central neste texto é demonstrar que para Santo Agostinho a vontade se liberta completamente (condição perdida pela enfermidade do pecado) por meio de uma relação paradoxal com a submissão: quando a vontade está totalmente submissa à verdade, ela é então plenamente livre. O processo pelo qual a vontade alcança este ponto dá-se mediante o auxílio da graça divina, de modo que, para ele, o livre arbítrio e a graça não se opõem e sim são aliados na restauração da vontade para o bem. Essa discussão é feita lançando-se mão da polêmica que o Bispo de Hipona travou contra Pelágio, reportada nos dois livros sobre A Graça (conforme a edição brasileira da Editora Paulus).
