The concept of social change in Sílvio Romero: a special reading of Brazilian politics at the end of the 19th century

Resumo: The process of formation of a field of knowledge which has constituted itself as a productive ground for the development of Brazilian sociology depends on the reflections of Sílvio Romero. His point of view was that only a literate elite would be able to produce changes considered necessary in the country at the end of the 19th century. Such a reading of Brazilian politics supplies the guiding elements of a given political proposal. This specific proposal, based mainly on his letters to Ruy Barbosa in which the implementation of parliamentarism in Brazil was proposed, will be analyzed in the article.
