The digitalized economy of bodies in gay dating apps

Resumo: Assuming that contemporaneity has brought about numerous continuities and discontinuities, it is undeniable that technology is increasingly omnipresent, even mediating social relationships. In this paper, discuss how dating applications (apps) further enhance the existing economy of bodies through technological mediation. This economy is based on a device incorporated by the apps that incorporates a mercantile structure to facilitate interactions. Data obtained from two investigations conducted among users of gay dating apps in Belo Horizonte and Fortaleza cities through approximations and cross-referencing suggest that an economic context is institutionalized, in which interactions operate on a market-based system, ratifying and sometimes challenging concepts such as scarcity, price, supply, demand etc. The non-material condition accelerates interactions, making the use of algorithms and defined scripts a predictable element of negotiation between users who need to be clear and direct in order to get what they want. The main findings suggest that gay dating apps mediate users who take a calculating perspective on searches to maintain some form of interaction with those they desire, a process that reflects a market dynamic.

En este texto se discuten las formas en que las aplicaciones de relación (apps) agudizan la ya existente economía de los cuerpos con el uso de la mediación tecnológica. Dicha economía consiste en un dispositivo incorporado por las apps que incorpora una estructura mercantil que sirve de base para el desarrollo de interacciones. Los datos, obtenidos a través de aproximaciones y cruces en dos investigaciones realizadas entre usuarios de apps de citas gay en Belo Horizonte y Fortaleza, permiten suponer que se institucionalizó un contexto en el que las interacciones operan sobre una base económica, ratificando y, en algunos casos, rompiendo nociones como escasez, precio, oferta, demanda, etc. La condición de no materialidad acelera las interacciones, convirtiendo el uso de guiones definidos por algoritmos en un elemento de previsibilidad y negociación entre usuarios, que necesitan ser claros y directos para conseguir lo que quieren. Las principales conclusiones sugieren que las apps de relaciones homosexuales median, de forma más acelerada, a los usuarios que se resignan a asumir una perspectiva de cálculo en las búsquedas para mantener alguna forma de interacción con quienes eventualmente desean, proceso que responde a una dinámica de mercado.La contemporanéité a apporté d'innombrables continuités et discontinuités, il est indéniable que la technologie se présente de manière de plus en plus omniprésente, médiatisant, entre autres, les relations sociales. Dans ce texte, nous discutons de la manière dont les applications relationnelles (apps) aiguisent l'économie des corps déjà existante grâce à la médiation technologique. Cette économie consiste en un dispositif incorporé par les apps qui intègre une structure mercantile servant de base au développement d'interactions. Les données, obtenues par approximations et croisements dans deux enquêtes menées auprès d'utilisateurs d'applis de rencontre gay à Belo Horizonte et Fortaleza, permettent de supposer qu'elle a institutionnalisé un contexte dans lequel les interactions fonctionnent sur une base économique, ratifiant ainsi et, dans certains cas, brisant des notions telles que la rareté, le prix, l'offre, la demande, etc. La condition de non-matérialité accélère les interactions, faisant de l'utilisation de scripts définis par des algorithmes un élément de prévisibilité et de négociation entre les utilisateurs, qui doivent être clairs et directs pour obtenir ce qu'ils veulent. Les principaux résultats suggèrent que les applications de relations homosexuelles médiatisent, de manière accélérée, les utilisateurs qui sont résignés à assumer une perspective de calcul dans les recherches pour maintenir une certaine forme d'interaction avec ceux qu'ils désirent éventuellement, un processus qui répond à une dynamique de marché.Como a contemporaneidade trouxe inúmeras continuidades e descontinuidades, é inegável que a tecnologia se apresenta de forma cada vez mais onipresente, mediando, inclusive, as relações sociais. Neste texto discutimos as formas pelas quais os aplicativos de relacionamento (apps) aguçam a já existente economia dos corpos com o emprego da mediação tecnológica. Tal economia consiste em um dispositivo incorporado pelos apps que incorpora uma estrutura mercantil que serve de base para o desenvolvimento das interações. Os dados, obtidos por meio de aproximações e cruzamentos em duas investigações levadas a cabo entre usuários de aplicativos de relacionamento gay de Belo Horizonte e Fortaleza, nos permitem assumir que se institucionalizou um contexto no qual as interações operam com bases econômicas, portanto ratificando e, em alguns casos, rompendo noções como escassez, preço, oferta, demanda etc. A condição de não-materialidade acelera as interações, fazendo do uso de scripts definidos pelos algoritmos um elemento de previsibilidade e de negociação entre os usuários, que precisam ser claros e diretos para obterem o que desejam.
