A survey on publications about the internationalization of college institutions

Resumo: Considering the increasing interest of major international educational groups in developing countries and specifically in Brazil, it is critical to understand what is being discussed about it by researchers from the Business Administration field, since this movement directly affects the strategies of local college institutions. This study aimed to contribute to future studies on strategies of local college institutions, providing a survey of publications of the last five years (2009-2013) on the internationalization of college institutions, in some major national events and national and international journals of the Business Administration. Based on secondary data, the descriptive-qualitative research presents few quantitative data. The results indicate that there is a lack of studies in this subject which shows that the subject does not receive due attention in this area. Except for one article, the others selected to this research did not focus on analyzing the movement of internationalization that occurs with the arrival of foreign players in the Brazilian college market, but on the internationalization movements of the local college institutions, mainly those with an academic motivation. We conclude that this subject, given the present circumstances, deserves further exploration within the Business Administration research area.

We conclude that this subject, given the present circumstances, deserves further exploration within the Business Administration research area. Considerando o crescente interesse de grandes grupos educacionais internacionais em países emergentes e, especificamente no Brasil, é de fundamental importância compreender o debate travado pelos pesquisadores da área de Administração, uma vez que esse movimento afeta diretamente as estratégias de instituições de ensino superior (IES) locais. Este estudo buscou contribuir para reflexões futuras sobre estratégias de IES locais, fornecendo um levantamento de publicações dos últimos cinco anos (de 2009 a 2013) sobre a internacionalização de IES, em alguns dos principais eventos nacionais e periódicos nacionais e internacionais da área da Administração. Baseada em dados secundários, a pesquisa descritivo-qualitativa possui poucos dados quantitativos. Os resultados indicam que há uma escassez de trabalhos dentro dessa temática, o que demonstra que o tema não recebe a devida atenção nessa área. Exceto por um artigo, os demais que se inserem no levantamento não focaram sua análise no movimento de internacionalização que ocorre com a chegada de players estrangeiros para o mercado do ensino superior brasileiro, mas sim nos movimentos de internacionalização de IES locais, principalmente aqueles com motivação acadêmica.
