Resumo: Changes in chemical properties caused by continuous sugarcane cropping, Saccharum spp. (Poaceae), in a Haplustox (red latosol) soil in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, were studied. Two close sites, one covered with a tropical forest and the other cultivated with sugarcane during 30 years, were selected. At each site seven points were sampled at three depths: 0-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm. Soil pH (CaCl2), organic matter, phosphorus (resin), exchangeable bases (Ca, Mg and K), CEC, base and aluminum saturation were determined. Sugarcane cropping system increased soil pH, base saturation and P, Ca and Mg contents when compared to effects by native vegetation. Cultivation decreased organic matter, free aluminum, CEC and aluminum saturationCom o objetivo de estudar alterações nas propriedades químicas de um Latossolo Vermelho Distrófico, causadas pelo cultivo contínuo de cana-de-açúcar, Saccharum spp. (Poaceae), selecionaram-se duas áreas adjacentes localizadas na fazenda São José, município de Jaboticabal, Estado de São Paulo: uma delas, sob floresta tropical e a outra, cultivada há trinta anos com cana-de-açúcar. Em cada área, foram coletadas, aleatoriamente, sete amostras (compostas por três pontos), em diferentes profundidades (0-20, 20-40 e 40-60 cm). Foram avaliados o pH (CaCl2), teor de matéria orgânica, P (resina), bases (Ca, K, Mg) e Al trocáveis, capacidade de troca catiônica (CTC), saturação por bases (V%), soma de bases (SB) e saturação por Al (m%). O manejo adotado no cultivo da cana-de-açúcar proporcionou aumentos no pH, nos teores de P, Ca, Mg, na soma de bases e V%, em relação à mata.
