Resumo: The knowledge of soil organic carbon fractions can contribute to infer about the best soil management. This paper aimed to measure the effect of different soil managements on total organic carbon, light and heavy carbon fractions, microbial biomass and respiration in a Typic Quartzipisamment under Brazilian cerrados. Organic carbon was not influenced by soil management. However, the light fraction of carbon, microbial biomass and activity was different among crop systems. The heavy carbon fraction was very stable under the soil and crop systems used. Carbon of the light fraction and of microbial biomass can be used as indicators of soil quality in short term. Area under native cerrado showed higher carbon content in the low fraction and consequently higher microbial activity.
