Ion exchange with alkaline earth in zeolites: effects of exchanging time on acid and basic characteristics

Resumo: The isopropanol decomposition is used as a model reaction for determining the acid or basic characteristics of zeolites, specially zeolites of the type Y due to the facility of decomposition in both sites. The acid sites produce water and propene, while the basic sites produce acetone and hydrogen. Zeolites exchanged with alkaline earth may carry out both sites due to their bivalent charges. In this research paper two types of zeolites (A and Y) underwent ion exchange according to an experimental design with the following parameters: cation introduction (Ca+2 or Ba+2) and exchanging time (5 minutes or 24 hours). The zeolites obtained were characterized by X-ray fluorescence, superficial area, and acidity/basicidity by the model reaction of isopropanol decomposition. It was verified that ion exchange modified acidity/basicidity in zeolites.

Sítios ácidos produzem água e propeno, já os sítios básicos produzem acetona e hidrogênio. Os metais alcalinos terrosos, por serem bivalentes, quando introduzidos na zeólita, provocam a formação de ambos os sítios. Neste trabalho, dois tipos de zeólitas (A e Y) foram submetidos à troca iônica segundo um planejamento fatorial cujas variáveis foram o cátion introduzido na zeólita (cálcio ou bário) e o tempo de troca iônica (5 minutos ou 24 horas). As zeólitas trocadas foram caracterizadas por fluorescência de raio X, área superficial e pela reação modelo de decomposição do isopropanol.
