Biomass generated of poultry production in West Region of Parana State – an energy source

This work reports the study of the energy potential from poultry-litter in the municipal districts of the West Region of Parana State, Brazil. The amount of waste produced during the year 2001 was 382.021 tons. The animal waste is an important biomass form, which may be used as a primary resource for electric power generation. The thermal energy with its direct burning that can be produced is 140.500 kJ/s; since only a part of that energy can be converted into mechanical work and electric power in a steam turbine-electric-generator, the electric power was estimated at 50.700 kW. The production of poultry-litter is seasonal because the installed power of a thermoelectric plant that burns this kind of biomass was estimated to be around 8.900 kW, considering the economy scale factor. For the space visualization of the production of residues and the potential of energy generation in the municipal districts of the West Region of Parana State, the System of Geographical Information (SIG) Arc View 3.2 was used
