Resumo: The efficiency of the map as a means of communication is evaluated. Based on the works of researchers linked to cartographic communication, thematic maps on the urban area of the city of Maringá PR Brazil were elaborated and evaluated. Three methods were used for their elaboration - Chorochromatic, Monochromatic and J. Bertin's. Questionnaires were given to undergraduate students of the Geography course at the State University of Maringá for the verification of the maps. While undertaking a comparative analysis among methods, research sought the best representation form and demonstrated that the process of transmission of cartographic information was linked to the production phase of the maps and their reading

Com base em trabalhos de autores ligados à comunicação cartográfica, foram elaborados e avaliados mapas temáticos da área urbana de Maringá - PR.
