Resumo: The behavior (grazing, rumination and rest) of 16 three- and four-year old Texel and Hampshire Down sheep is provided. Experiment was conducted from April 1999 to March 2000, during three nights a month, from 18 h to 6 h, with eight sheep of each breed. Four animals of each breed were sheared. Pasture quality was evaluated, climate data were reported hourly and rainfall monthly. Conditions of pasture and climatic variables might have altered sheep’s behavior. Low yield of green leaves, crude protein and high FDA levels during the winter might have raised grazing and rumination time. Period of rest decreased during the winter and spring. Wool did not have any effect on the behavior of animals.

Avaliou-se a qualidade da pastagem. Os dados climáticos foram registrados a cada hora e a precipitação, mensalmente. As condições de pastagem e as variáveis climáticas podem ter alterado o comportamento. A baixa produção de folhas verdes e proteína bruta e altos teores de FDA no inverno podem ter elevado o tempo de pastejo e ruminação. O comportamento de ócio alcançou menores tempos no inverno e primavera.
