Resumo: The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of replacement of tifton hay by forage cactus on the ingestive behavior of lactating Holstein cows. Five cows were assigned to a 5x5 square design. Each experimental period lasted 17 days, 10 for adaptation and 7 for data collection. The registration of the variable behaviors was accomplished visually, at intervals of five minutes, in 24 hours. The intake of dry matter, time expended in feeding and rumination, efficiency of feeding and rumination (g DM/h) were not affected by the forage cactus levels; resting time increased linearly, in function of the levels of decreased forage cactus in the diet; however the neutral detergent fiber intake, the total chewing time, the efficiencies of feeding and rumination (g NDF/h) and water intake decreased linearly, while levels of forage cactus increased in the diet
