The study aimed at interpreting stories from the Beach Volley forerunners who established in 1940 on Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro the beginning of this sport for recreation. After the forerunners, occupied the area we noticed that sport being played and accepted by the “cariocas”, awakening for the pleasure and socializing potential of that game. The material from the Internet, old newspapers and reports from old players was added to the forerunners testimonials gathered by the researcher Lenice Peluso, enabling a comprehensive view of this theme. The conclusion was that the Beach Volley which had started solely for recreation, established its cultural identity in Rio de Janeiro attending to the players’ and general public’s wishes of landscapes and free open spaces which bring feelings of well-being d spaciousness, contributing to the beach sportization.
