INDIGENOUS LANDS AND TERRITORIAL RIGHTS IN THE GUARANI VILLAGE OF SÃO NICOLAU DO RIO PARDO (PROVINCE OF SÃO PEDRO)

The main objective of this article is to understand the disputes over the lands in the village of São Nicolau do Rio Pardo, in the Province of São Pedro (currently Rio Grande do Sul) during the mid-19th century. Founded in the mid-18th century, the village remained an eminently indigenous space until the mid-1800s. We seek to recompose the social and power relations in which the indigenous people were inserted amid conflicts over the possession of their territories, which came to be understood as “belonging to the nation”. The central historical sources are documents from the General Directorate of the Indians and the village, official letters and requirements, correspondence from the Rio Pardo City Council and travelers' reports. The analysis of the records demonstrates that the occupation of the lands of the village and the Rio Pardo valley by the indigenous peoples could allow or derail projects to advance capitalism and to consolidate the national State during the 19th century.
