“OSTALGIE” AND THE GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC: the disputes over the memories of the homosexualities

Resumo: Abstract: Ostalgie, a German neologism that designates the nostalgic sentiment towards life in the former German Democratic Republic, has been a characteristic feature of the discussions that succeeded the German unification. The compliance or setback towards Ostalgie occurs within a series of disputes over the framing of a national memory. It is in this discursive competition of memory that homosexualities and their experiences in East Germany find a useful ground for their problematization, albeit trapped in a constant dispute that either aims to generalize the repression of these groups as the only trace of their lives in the GDR, or attests for a sexual revolution that would have benefited them and put them at an advantage over their western counterpart. Thus, we intend here to outline the treatment of homosexuality within the former socialist state, as well its disputes over that memory as a result of the ambiguities that surrounded homosexual lives in East Germany. La conformidad o la contrariedad de Ostalgie se produce dentro de una serie de disputas sobre la elaboración de una memoria nacional. Es en esta competencia sobre la memoria que las homosexualidades y sus experiencias en Alemania Oriental encuentran un terreno provechoso para su problematización, pero atrapados en una disputa constante que ora apunta a generalizar la represión de estos grupos como el único rastro de sus vidas en la RDA, ora testifica para una revolución sexual que los hubiera beneficiado y los hubiera puesto en ventaja sobre su contraparte occidental. De esta manera, se pretende aquí describir el tratamiento de la homosexualidad dentro del antiguo estado socialista, así como las disputas sobre esa memoria como resultado de las ambigüedades que rodearon las vidas homosexuales en Alemania del Este. Alemania del Este.Resumo: A Ostalgie, neologismo alemão para designar a nostalgia para com a vida na antiga República Democrática Alemã, tem sido um traço característico dos discursos posteriores a reunificação alemã. A conformidade ou contrariedade à Ostalgie ocorre dentro de uma série de disputas sobre o enquadramento de uma memória nacional. É nessa concorrência sobre a memória que as homossexualidades e suas vivências na Alemanha Oriental encontram um terreno profícuo para sua problematização, mas presas em uma constate disputa que ora visa generalizar a repressão desses grupos como o único traço de suas vidas na RDA, ora atesta para uma revolução sexual que os teria beneficiado e os colocado em vantagem em relação à sua contrapartida ocidental. Assim, pretende-se aqui traçar o tratamento sobre a homossexualidade no antigo Estado alemão socialista, bem como as disputas sobre essa memória como resultantes das ambiguidades que circundaram as vidas homossexuais na Alemanha Oriental.
