Resumo: Abstract: The text reflects on the controversy that involved the figures of historians Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen and João Francisco Lisboa, which revolved around the issue of indigenous slavery. The discussion, initiated by the journalist and historian from Maranhão in the Note C of the Jornal de Tímon (1858), can be read from a dispute over styles of writing history in the Brazil of the 19th century. Varnhagen’s “answer” appeared only in 1867, in the booklet The Brave Indians and Mr. Lisboa, in which he defended himself against censorship and offered some elements to analyze the historian’s craft and the forms of historiography of that period. La “respuesta” de Varnhagen apareció solo en 1867 en el opúsculo Os índios bravos e o Sr. Lisboa, donde se defendió contra la censura y ofreció algunos elementos para analizar el oficio del historiador y las formas de la historiografía de ese período. A discussão, iniciada pelo jornalista e historiador maranhense, na Nota C do Jornal de Tímon (1858), pode ser lida a partir de uma disputa por modos de se escrever história no Brasil oitocentista. A “resposta” de Varnhagen apareceu somente em 1867, no opúsculo Os índios bravos e o Sr. Lisboa, em que se defendeu da censura e ofereceu alguns elementos para se analisar o ofício do historiador e as formas da historiografia daquele período.
