Resumo: It analyses Historiography as a fomenter element of traditions that present themselves as interpreters of the social reality of Maranhão. It shows from a few examples, how some authors have become ‘classics’ throughout Maranhão History, therefore, indispensable as a point of inflection to comprehend a determined period of time or thematic in History. It discusses the narrative character of historiography, its difficulties and derivations. It points out new routs of Historical research in Maranhão.

Mostra a partir de alguns exemplos citados sucintamente, como determinados autores ao longo da história do Maranhão se tornaram “clássicos”, portanto, indispensáveis como ponto de inflexão para compreensão de um determinado período ou temática em História.
