Resumo: | This article proposes to analyze the relevant role of the press in São Luís on the control of popular and black parties, as well as presenting how party planners made newspapers a channel of expression through which their entertainment was positive. In São Luís, the presence of cultural events such as the Bumba meu boi, the sambas, the Drum and the Divino Espírito Santo festivals was a subject that generated a significant amount of news and publications in newspapers, especially from the second half of the 19th century. The publications were, for the most part, complaints about having fun that happened quite frequently in the city. However, despite the complaints and the construction of the negative image that the press helped to build on the festive spaces of the working class, the party-goers used the periodicals to present a positive self-image and for their own defense, when necessary. |
