“I DON'T WANT ROADS ON MY LAND!” indigenous people between the Jequitinhonha and Mucuri navigation and development projects in the second half of the XIX century

This text will deal with the relations between the indigenous people and the main commercial enterprises in the North of Minas Gerais and the South of Bahia, focusing on the dispute between the Mucuri and Jequitinhonha rivers, in the second half of the 19th century. The territory analyzed was the scene of rivalries between two large state/private projects, the one headed by Bahia: navigation of the Jequitinhonha and the one coordinated by the Ottoni: navigation of the Mucuri. Granting the occupation of this territory to individuals was constituted as a maneuver by the imperial government, for its consolidation on the borders. Companies funded with public money should clear the forests, “pacify” the Indians and turn the land into a market product. In the midst of this conjuncture, the various indigenous groups faced the mishaps of the villages, as well as the enterprises built in their villages.
