ANALYTICAL ECLECTICSM AS A MEANS TO APROXIMATE THE THEORY TO THE PRACTICAL UNDERSTANDING OF INTERNATIONAL PHENOMENA:: THE CASE OF CLIMATE GOVERNANCE IN AVIATION

Events on global scale, such as climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic highlight the complexityof the international system in which, on the one hand, the relevance of global governance grows and, on theother hand, there is an upsurge of nationalisms and disputes between countries to expand power. In this context,the article analyses the analytical tools taught in International Relations (IR) courses and their usefulness in theanalysis of complex phenomena of the current global system. The central argument is the need to adopt elementsof analysis from different research traditions to form an eclectic analytical framework capable of explaining thefacts in their multiple dimensions. Then, the case study is the aviation climate governance that resulted in aunique agreement for the offsetting of greenhouse gas emissions from international flights (CORSIA). Thearticle concludes that the understanding of complex interactions like this one – which characterise the currentinternational system – demands that the Discipline stimulates a creative combination of analytical tools, with aview to providing IR with greater capacity to contribute with policy formulators and society.
