Resumo: Cotton down is an important natural fiber with many applications. Its market value is associated with quality, expressed through variables and considerations of aspects such as production location, genetic modifications and maturity. These measurements are performed by a High-Volume Instrument (HVI). This analysis technology demands high costs, lengthy analysis time, laborious sample preparation, among other conditions. With Raman spectroscopy such measurements can be performed in a simple, fast and economically viable way. Therefore, the objective is to develop an analytical methodology through Raman spectroscopy and multivariate analysis to determine quality attributes and classification of cotton fibers of different classes. For this, spectra of 213 cotton fiber samples were recorded in the region of 400 to 2300 cm-1 with a portable Raman spectrometer. With the HVI, reference measurements were made for the attributes length, short fiber index, micronaire index, strength and reflectance. The exploratory analysis was performed through the PCA's with the data of attributes and Raman spectra. Likewise, for the classification of samples, PLS-DA models were built with the data of measured quality attributes and Raman spectral. The determination of the attributes took place through the PLS models. From the spectral profile of the samples, a working range in the region of 700 to 1700 cm-1 was selected. In the PLS-DA Raman models, an RMSE of 17% was obtained for the samples of different maturities in the test stage. With the data of quality attributes, 90.51% accuracy was obtained for the samples from locality B in the test stage. In PLS, the model for the short fiber index parameter presented an RMSEC of 0.590 and RMSEP of 0.525, lower than the coefficient of variation 8,55. Thus, the method has potential for classifying samples through Raman spectroscopy, considering that it is a technique of simple application and low cost for analysis, in addition to the speed that the method can present to classify the fibers according to the productive profile. Also, it is possible to classify fibers from different locations from the models built with the HVI data. As for the quantification models, some experimental adjustments are needed to improve their predictive capacity.

O seu valor de mercado está associado à qualidade, expressa por meio de variáveis e considerações de aspectos como localidade de produção, modificações genéticas e maturidade. Essas medidas são realizadas por instrumento de alto volume (HVI, do inglês High Volume Instrument). Essa tecnologia de análise demanda custos elevados, tempo de análise demorado, preparo de amostras trabalhoso, entre outras condições. Com a espectroscopia Raman tais medidas podem ser realizadas de modo simples, rápido e economicamente viável. Sendo assim, objetiva-se desenvolver uma metodologia analítica por meio da espectroscopia Raman e análise multivariada para determinação de atributos de qualidade e classificação de fibras de algodão de diferentes classes. Para isso, foram registrados espectros de 213 amostras de fibras de algodão na região de 400 a 2300 cm-1 com um espectrômetro Raman portátil. Com o HVI, realizou-se as medidas de referência dos atributos comprimento, índice de fibras curtas, índice de micronaire, resistência e reflectância. A análise exploratória foi realizada através das PCA’s com os dados de atributos e espectros Raman. Igualmente, para classificação das amostras construíram-se modelos de PLS-DA com os dados de atributos de qualidade medidos e espectrais Raman. Já a determinação dos atributos deu-se através dos modelos de PLS. A partir do perfil espectral das amostras selecionou-se uma faixa de trabalho na região de 700 a 1700 cm-1. Nos modelos PLS-DA Raman obteve-se para as amostras de diferentes maturidades um RMSE de 17% na etapa de teste. Com os dados de atributos de qualidade obteve-se para as amostras da localidade B 90,51% de acerto na etapa de teste. No PLS, o modelo para o parâmetro de índice de fibras curta apresentou um RMSEC de 0,590 e RMSEP de 0,525, inferiores ao coeficiente de variação 8,55. Deste modo, o método apresenta potencial para classificação de amostras através da espectroscopia Raman, tendo em vista que é uma técnica de simples aplicação e de baixo custo para análise, além da rapidez que o método pode apresentar para classificar as fibras quanto ao perfil produtivo. Também, é possível fazer a classificação de fibras de diferentes localidades a partir dos modelos construídos com os dados de HVI.
