In this dissertation, we performed a reading of the the poetic work of melancholy Mário de Sá-Carneiro, specifically in the book of poetry Dispersion, be seen in these poems, where the melancholy presents itself more noticeable. There are several words that refer to the semantic field of this work as melancholy, pain, anguish, despair and sadness. Melancholy is revealed in several ways in poetic carneiriana through recurring themes like death, suicide, despair constant the identity crisis, in addition to search, unsuccessfully, for a total realization of their erotic desires. From the reflections of Sigmund Freud (2006) and Julia Kristeva (1989), the concept of melancholy was taken to perceive the relationship between the poet, his work and the modern world. Through analysis of the poems, we conclude that the melancholy feeling that is in texts de Sá-Carneiro, is the same feeling that was part of the life of our Portuguese author
