Resumo: Introduction: Intensive Care Units are specialized places that use technology and need and appropriate information volume in order to provide efficient care for critical patients. Objective: To describe the epidemiological profile of patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of a Reference Service. Materials and methods: An observational, descriptive and analytical, documental study with a quantitative approach, carried out at the Adult Intensive Care Unit of the Emergency and Trauma Hospital Senador Humberto Lucena in João Pessoa - Paraíba. The sample consisted of all the medical records of hospitalized patients from 2015 to 2017. The information was collected through a form and inserted by double typing into a database in SPSS. Data were presented through descriptive and inferential statistics (Chi-square or Fisher's exact test). The level of significance was 5%. Results: A total of 1,121 medical records were analyzed, with the majority belonging to the male sex (69.1%), involving individuals aged 60 years or older (29.3%), who came from other sectors of the hospital itself (60.8 %), with external causes constituting the main cause of hospitalization (50.5%) and 36.4% of patients evolving to death. The bivariate analysis revealed an association between gender and variables age range (p <0.05), external causes (p <0.05) and reasons for hospitalization (p <0.05). Among the external causes, accidents (76.5%), followed by aggressions (21.9%), while among the non-external causes, the main reasons were diseases of the circulatory system (79.3%) and diseases of the nervous system (5.8%). Accidents and aggressions were more frequent in men, 78.5% and 90.3%, respectively. Of the 408 cases of death, the highest frequency was recorded among men (66.9%), in the age range of 50-59 years (17.6%). Non-external causes were the main etiology (55.1%), . There was a statistically significant association between the occurrence of death and the variables age range (p <0.05), cause of hospitalization (p <0.05), non-external causes (p <0.05), surgical procedure, 05) and time of hospitalization (p <0.05). It is Concluded The patients are mostly males, are over 60 years of age and most have not performed any surgical procedure. Regarding external causes, the most common were accidents, while for non-external causes, diseases of the circulatory system were the most prevalent. The occurrence of death was associated with age, hospitalization, non-external causes, surgical procedures and duration of hospitalization.

Submitted by Jean Medeiros (jeanletras@uepb.edu.br) on 2021-11-18T12:09:11Z No. of bitstreams: 1 PDF - Pablo Silva Ribeiro de Albuquerque.pdf: 1672208 bytes, checksum: 4246491347595c36722fa9c7eba5162e (MD5)Approved for entry into archive by Rosalvo Andrade (rosalvo_andrade@servidor.uepb.edu.br) on 2021-11-18T20:04:45Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 1 PDF - Pablo Silva Ribeiro de Albuquerque.pdf: 1672208 bytes, checksum: 4246491347595c36722fa9c7eba5162e (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2022-01-13T13:46:31Z (GMT).
