Social justice in education: underpinnings and practical consequences

Resumo: This paper defends the use of social justice - from the contributions of Gewirtz and Young – as a concept in educational analysis. The goal is to demonstrate the importance of operating with this concept, particularly in the context of market-based policies in education currently in place both globally and in Brazil. With this goal, two examples of curricular policies for Elementary Education are analyzed in light of this concept. One of the examined examples are policies based on market assumptions, aiming at standardizing the curriculum of the first grades of elementary education in the State of Rio Grande do Sul through the adoption of scripted educational systems. The other example is the case of the Citizen School in the city of Porto Alegre which provides a contrast to the processes of marketization in education. Using these examples, we demonstrate the importance of using the concept of social justice to highlight the structural injustices in the educational sphere, injustices which are enhanced by the introduction of market-based policies in education, and to provide viable alternatives to these policies.   Keywords: Social justice. A lo largo del texto, se tiene como objetivo demostrar la importancia de operar con este concepto en vista, principalmente, de los procesos de mercadificação por el cual viene pasando la educación en un nivel global y la educación brasileña en particular. Para ello, son analizados, a la luz de este concepto dos ejemplos de políticas curriculares para la Educación Fundamental. Uno de los ejemplos analizados se relaciona con políticas basadas en supuestos de mercado y, con el intento de estandarizar el currículo de las series iniciales en el Estado de Rio Grande do Sul por intermedio de la adopción de sistemas de enseñanza. El otro ejemplo examinado se concretó en la ciudad de Porto Alegre y se contrapone a los procesos de mercadificação. A partir de estos análisis, se demuestra la importancia del uso del concepto de justicia social para traer a la escena las injusticias estructurales, en el ámbito educativo y que se relacionan con las políticas de mercado, así como una alternativa viable a esas políticas.   Palabras clave: Justicia social. Educación fundamental.Este texto tem como objetivo defender a incorporação do conceito de justiça social – utilizado a partir das contribuições de Gewirtz e Young – nas análises educacionais. Ao longo do texto, tem-se como objetivo demonstrar a importância de operar com este conceito tendo em vista, principalmente, os processos de mercadificação pelo qual vem passando a educação em um nível global e a educação brasileira em particular. Para tanto, são analisados, à luz de tal conceito, dois exemplos de políticas curriculares para a Educação Fundamental. Um dos exemplos analisados relaciona-se com políticas baseadas em pressupostos de mercado e com a tentativa de padronizar o currículo das anos iniciais no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul através da adoção de sistemas de ensino. O outro exemplo examinado concretizou-se na cidade de Porto Alegre e contrapõe-se aos processos de mercadificação.  A partir destas análises, demonstra-se a importância do uso do conceito de justiça social para trazer à cena as injustiças estruturais no âmbito educacional e que se relacionam às políticas de mercado, bem como uma alternativa viável a essas políticas.   Palavras-chave: Justiça social.
