An examination of methodological rigor and reliability in qualitative research within theses and dissertations across biomedical and non-biomedical fields from 2008 to 2018

Resumo: This study investigated how concern over scientific rigor have been configured in qualitative research in doctoral dissertations and master’s theses in the context of Brazilian graduate studies. An initial corpus of 425 dissertations and theses for the period 2008 and 2018 was obtained from the directory of the Brazilian Digital Library of Dissertations and Theses (BDTD) of the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (IBICT). A sample of 244 documents was then validated from two independent analyses, with emphasis on the sections “Abstract”, “Methodology”, “Final considerations” and/or “Conclusions” and “Limitations of the study” (if any). The results indicate that concerns over rigor for 41% (n=99) of the documents are noticeable in the research report, although not always detailed. However, the discussion of research biases or strategies aimed at the results’ reliability and/or validity were not predominant characteristics in these documents. Keywords: Qualitative research. Fue obtenido un corpus inicial de 425 tesis y disertaciones para el período 2008 y 2018, en el acervo de la Biblioteca Digital Brasileña de Tesis y Disertaciones (BDTD) del Instituto Brasileño de Información en Ciencia y Tecnología (IBICT). De este corpus, se validó una muestra de 244 documentos a partir de dos análisis independientes, con énfasis en las secciones “Resumen”, “Metodología”, “Consideraciones finales”, y/o “Conclusiones” y “Limitaciones del estudio” (cuando había). Los resultados indican que en el informe de investigación, el 41% (n=99) de los documentos contienen preocupaciones y/o criterios explícitos sobre el rigor, aunque no siempre detallados. Sin embargo, la discusión sobre sesgos de investigación o estrategias orientadas a la confiabilidad y/o validez de los resultados no fueron características predominantes en estos documentos. Foi obtido um corpus inicial de 425 teses e dissertações para o período 2008-2018, no diretório da Biblioteca Digital Brasileira de Teses e Dissertações (BDTD) do Instituto Brasileiro de Informação em Ciência e Tecnologia (IBICT). Uma amostra de 244 documentos desse corpus foi validada a partir de duas análises independentes, com foco nas seções “Resumo”, “Metodologia”, “Considerações finais e/ou Conclusões” e “Limitações do estudo” (quando havia). Os resultados indicam que no relato da pesquisa em 41% (n=99) dos documentos há uma apresentação de preocupações e/ou critérios sobre rigor, embora nem sempre detalhados.
