Intermittent pathways in the access to artistic careers in young descendants of migrants

Resumo: By adopting an intersectionality approach, this paper aims to analyse how some social categories – ethnic-racial origin, nationality and socioeconomic context – determine the pathways of young migrants’ descendants in their access to artistic careers. Data is based on semi-structured interviews with youth from different origins (Africa, Brazil and Eastern Europe) living in Sintra, Portugal. Results indicate that differences between their access to careers related to arts, are determined by the interlink of these social categories. While in some cases, the intersection of categories reproduces their underprivileged social position and block the access to these careers; in other cases, their social position is mitigated and the access to artistic careers is facilitated. At the conclusion, we suggest the need of adopting in further investigations an intersectionality paradigm when addressing the artistic pathways of young migrants’ descendants. Migrants’ descendants.Partiendo de una perspectiva interseccional, este artículo analiza como ciertas categorías sociales – origen étnico-racial, nacionalidad y contexto socioeconómico – determinan los percursos de jóvenes descendientes de inmigrantes en el acceso a carreras profesionales artísticas. Los datos se basan en entrevistas semiestructuradas realizadas a jóvenes de diferentes orígenes (África, Brasil y Europa de Leste) a vivir en Sintra, Portugal. Los resultados indican diferencias entre sus accesos a profesiones relacionadas con el arte, derivadas del entrecruzamiento de esas categorías. Si en algunos casos, la intersección de las categorías reproduce su posición social desfavorecida y bloquea el acceso a estas carreras; en otros casos, su posición social es mitigada y el acceso a esas carreras termina por ser facilitado. En conclusión, se sugiere la necesidad en adoptar en estudios futuros profesionales artísticos de jóvenes descendientes de inmigrantes. Palabras-clave: Intersecionalidad. Os dados baseiam-se em entrevistas semiestruturadas realizadas a jovens de diferentes origens (África, Brasil e Europa de Leste) a residirem em Sintra, Portugal. Os resultados indicam diferenças entre o acesso a profissões relacionadas com as artes, derivadas do entrecruzamento destas categorias sociais. Se, nalguns casos, a intersecção das categorias reproduz a sua posição social desfavorecida e bloqueia o acesso a estas carreiras; noutros casos, a sua posição social é mitigada e o acesso a estas carreiras acaba por ser facilitado. Na conclusão, sugere-se a necessidade de adotar em estudos futuros um paradigma interseccional nos percursos profissionais artísticos de jovens descendentes de imigrantes.
