Resumo: The text aims to understand traits used by journalism to portray people with Down syndrome in its products. As theoretical-methodological contributions, the biopsychosocial model of disability is mobilized; ableism; communicative citizenship and subjects in interrelation with the media; the human right to communication; deficient journalism; and transmethodological thinking. Digital reports containing these individuals as protagonists of the narrative and published by El País Brasil were used as reference materials. This way, it is also possible to broaden and complexify nuances involving the construction and exercise of Down's communicative citizenship based on media representation and visibility. The findings stress the silencing of people with Down syndrome to the detriment of spokespersons and for the reproduction of the ableist discourse.
