Brazilian Enduring Values: the predominance of the private over the public

Resumo: By studying news values, Gans defined values that journalists carry during professional practice. Incorporated in judging the importance of events, they conduct news production and constitute a cultural map of society. This article shows from the analysis of Folha de S. Paulo and O Globo that values can be enduring or topical in determining what will be reported. In Brazil, the search results demonstrate that newspapers prioritize news that expresses supremacy from a private standpoint over the public, leaving aside the social consequences of this approach. The submission of the public to the private in Brazil is proposed as an enduring value.

Incorporados ao julgamento da importância dos acontecimentos, eles conduzem a produção noticiosa e constituem um mapa cultural da sociedade. Este artigo mostra, a partir da análise da Folha de S. Paulo e de O Globo, que os valores podem ser duradouros ou tópicos na determinação do que vai ser noticiado. No Brasil, os resultados da pesquisa apontam que os jornais priorizam notícias que exprimem a supremacia do ponto de vista privado sobre o público, deixando de lado as consequências sociais desse enfoque.
