Homicidal violence and suicide of men and women in the State of Paraná, Brazil: retrospective analysis between 2014 and 2017

Resumo: Violence affects men and women differently, in diverse spaces and at different stages of life. Based on the Brazilian Ministry of Health's database SIM (Mortality Information System), we tabulated and analyzed homicide and suicide data of Parana’s State, Brazil, according to gender, race/ethnicity, education, marital status and age of victims, causes, place of death, and municipality of occurrence, for the period between 2014 and 2017. The study enabled a snapshot of the interpersonal and self-inflicted lethal violence in Paraná, plotting the average rates in maps, with the QGIS software. The results make it possible to reflect on measures that can mitigate the injuries and also prevent each type of violence, in order to plan and implement specific public policies, focusing on the most violent territories.

Basado en la base de datos SIM (Sistema de Información de Mortalidad) del Ministerio de Salud, se pudo tabular y analizar homicidios y suicidios en el Estado de Paraná, según género, raza / etnia, educación, estado civil, grupo de edad  de las víctimas, lugar de muerte, las causas y municipio de ocurrencia, entre 2014 y 2017. El estudio permitió la construcción del perfil de violencia letal interpersonal y autoinfligida en Paraná, graficando las tasas promedio en mapas haciendo uso el software QGIS. Los resultados permiten reflexionar sobre medidas que pueden ablandar los problemas, así como prevenir cada tipo de violencia, planeando e implementando políticas públicas específicas centradas en los territorios más violentos.A violência afeta homens e mulheres de diferentes maneiras nos distintos espaços e em diferentes fases da vida. Com base no banco de dados do SIM (Sistema de Informação sobre Mortalidade) do Ministério da Saúde, foi possível tabular e analisar os homicídios e suicídios do Estado do Paraná, de acordo com gênero, raça/etnia, escolaridade, estado civil, faixa etária das vítimas, local do óbito, causas e município de ocorrência, no período entre 2014 e 2017. O estudo possibilitou a construção de um retrato sobre as violências letais interpessoal e autoprovocada do Paraná, com a plotagem das taxas médias em mapas com o software QGIS.
