City, gay sociability and effeminacy: an intersectional experience

Resumo: This article proposes an analysis of the effeminate gay urban experience, paying special attention to the particularities of such experiences, confrontations, and disputes over cityspaces. Data was collected using an electronic form that was filled in by 240 cisgender gay men and 8 semi­structured interviews with 8 self­declared effeminate gay men. Our resultsshowed that effeminate, poor, black, peripheral and young gays experience a greater degree of vulnerability in encounters with/in the city and experience the city in a more negative and fearful way, especially in public spaces. These data reinforce the importance of the intersectional lens and the markers of difference in understanding this phenomenon.

Se aplicó un formulario electrónico a 240 hombres homosexuales cisgénero y se realizaron 8 entrevistas semiestructuradas con 8 hombres homosexuales de esta muestra, que se declararon afeminados. Se constató que los gays afeminados, pobres, negros, periféricos y jóvenes experimentan un mayor grado de vulnerabilidad en los encuentros con/en la ciudad y viven la ciudad de forma más negativa y temerosa, especialmente en los espacios públicos.Estos datos refuerzan la importancia de la lente interseccional y los marcadores de diferencia en la comprensión de la experiencia urbana gay.Este artigo pretende analisar a experiência urbana gay afeminada, dando especial atenção às particularidades de tais vivências, enfrentamentos e disputas pelos espaços da cidade. Aplicou­ se um formulário eletrônico junto a 240 homens gays cisgêneros e foram realizadas 8 entrevistas semiestruturadas com 8 homens gays dessa amostra, autodeclarados afeminados. Encontrou­se que gays afeminados, pobres, negros, periféricos e jovens experienciam maior grau de vulnerabilidade nos encontros com a/na cidade e vivenciam a cidade de forma mais negativa e temerosa, sobretudo nos espaços públicos.
