Negligent or neglected families? An analysis of negligence against children and teenagers in Mossoró-RN

This article aims to analyze the negligence against children and teenagers in the city of Mossoró-RN, based on cases reported to the Specialized Reference Center in Social Assistance (CREAS), in the period from 2014 to 2019. Data collection was carried out in the city itself, through the analysis of processes involving this group. We observed that negligence is more common than it appears, being the second largest cause of reported violations against children and teenagers during the period studied in the research. It was also possible to observe that all rapists were part of the children and teenagers’ families, leading to the exclusive responsibility of these members, particularly the mothers. Furthermore, in many cases, the accountability of the family denies the possibility of critical analysis of the cultural, social, political, and economic aspects present in the daily lives of these families, making the existence of structural violence invisible.
