Neste trabalho, examinaremos o impacto devastador da modernização orientada pela expansão do capitalismo numa comunidade localizada às margens do rio Paraná. Tal impacto foi gerado por duas grandes obras: a construção de uma ponte sobre o rio e a construção de uma usina hidrelétrica que formou um grande lago e submergiu a vila. A população foi transferida para um núcleo urbano, planejado e construído como indenização pela submersão do antigo povoamento. A criação do lago e a mudança para a nova cidade modifi caram profundamente a vida da comunidade. A pesca, o plantio nas terras férteis das margens do rio e a olaria que utilizava a farta argila sofreram um golpe profundo, afetando a atividade econômica e todo o modo de vida da população local. A intervenção modernizadora, em nome do progresso, destruiu uma comunidade e uma cultura que tinham o rio como referência principal. Palavras-chave: Modernização. Cultura. Comunidade. Subjetividade. Abstract: This paper aims at examining the impact of the modernization orientated by the expansion of capitalism in a community located alongside the Paraná River. This impact was produced by two large works: the construction of a bridge and the construction of a hydroelectric station, which formed a big lake that submerged the village. The population was transferred to an urban site planned and built as reparation for the submersion of the previous settlement. The creation of the lake and the transference to the new city deeply modifi ed the life of the community. Activities such as fi shing, planting in the fertile lands of the river’s banks and the pottery that used its abundant clay suffered a hard blow, which affected the economical activity and the whole way of life of the local population. In the name of progress, the modernizing intervention destroyed a community and a culture that had the river as its main reference. Keywords: Modernization. Culture. Community. Subjectivity.
