Resumo: Studies on children's development have been carried out throughout history to the present day, understanding the need to understand and act in the different areas involving childhood and the family. This work presents an analysis of the functions of parental affection in children's psychic development, a need that arose from the care provided to families in the community by the Psychology Department of the Nucleus of Studies and Defense of the Rights of Children and Youth (NEDDIJ) in the city of Guarapuava/PR, where contents related to the theme of affective abandonment were observed. The methodology of the article is a bibliographic survey and analysis of documents, which allowed us to understand from the results that the development of the child is constituted in a healthy way through contact and the presence of parental affection, which is essential both for the survival of the child and for the construction of its psychic and social structure.
