Resumo: The repeated nuclear tests conducted by North Korea in Northeast Asia have had a profound impact, leading to significant transformations in the perceptions and security policies of countries situated in this strategically important region. Among the nations affected, Japan stands out as a compelling case of defense policy evolution during the early 21st century. Against the backdrop of mounting tensions, this article aims to examine Japan's policies towards North Korea, specifically exploring whether the country has adopted a stance of deterrence by denial. To achieve this, the article delves into various aspects, including: (i) the dynamics of Japan-North Korea relations, (ii) Japan's perceptions of the regional nuclear capabilities and security dynamics, based on the analysis of White Papers and Diplomatic Bluebooks, and (iii) the evolution of defense policies under the leadership of Shinzo Abe (2012-2020). Received on: 28 Feb. 2023 | Accepted on: 05 Jul. 2023.Os contínuos lançamentos de testes nucleares norte-coreanos no Nordeste Asiático têm impactado em transformações nas percepções e políticas de segurança dos países localizados em tal tabuleiro estratégico. Um dos casos mais emblemáticos de transformação nas políticas de defesa é o caso japonês e suas transformações no início do século XXI. Considerando o cenário de crescentes tensões na região, o presente artigo tem como objetivo central analisar as políticas adotadas pelo Japão em relação à Coreia do Norte, compreendendo se o país tem adotado uma postura de dissuasão por negação. Para isso o artigo analisa: (i) as relações Japão-Coreia do Norte, (ii) as percepções do país em relação às capacidades nucleares e tensões em seu entorno regional, por meio da análise dos Livros Brancos e dos Livros Diplomáticos, e (iii) as políticas de defesa durante o governo de Shinzo Abe (2012-2020).
