Resumo: Recent evidence shows that gender relations have been changing in a wide range of themes; however, sexual division of work and inequality still thrives. For instance, when couples face parenthood, domestic and care giving tasks continue to be predominantly assigned to women. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore the experience of a series of men during their trajectory to fatherhood (first time fathers) in order to identify the predominant ideals about becoming a father and the obstacles which continue to complicate the fact that men intervene with more egalitarian practices regarding to upbringing. Therefore, in depth interviews with men living in Mexico City were conducted. Through a qualitative analysis we developed four thematic axes which revealed the challenges that men with an egalitarian ideal about fatherhood struggle; and ultimately, the relevance of structural, identity and relational aspects are discussed.

Um desses ordenamentos fica evidenciado quando os casais se enfrentam à parentalidade, onde as tarefas domésticas e dos cuidados ainda são atribuídas predominantemente às mulheres. O objetivo da presente pesquisa foi explorar a vivência de alguns homens no trânsito à paternidade pela primeira vez para identificar os ideais predominantes e os obstáculos que ainda dificultam aos homens a execução de práticas mais equitativas. Na pesquisa foram feitas entrevistas em profundidade com homens que moram na Cidade do México. Mediante a presente análise, desenvolvemos quatro eixos temáticos que dão conta dos desafios enfrentados pelos varões com ideais equitativos, onde se mostra a importância de certos aspetos estruturais, identitários e relacionais.En los últimos años las relaciones de género se han transformado, sin embargo, hay ordenamientos que siguen perpetuando la división sexual del trabajo y la desigualdad. Uno de ellos se evidencia cuando las parejas se enfrentan a la parentalidad, donde las tareas domésticas y de cuidado siguen siendo asignadas predominantemente a las mujeres. El objetivo de este estudio fue explorar la vivencia de algunos varones al transitar a la paternidad por vez primera para identificar los ideales predominantes y los obstáculos que siguen dificultando que los varones ejerzan prácticas más equitativas. Para ello se hicieron entrevistas a profundidad con hombres radicando en Ciudad de México.
