Resumo: The Colônia Juliano Moreira in the last years has been object of studies of different disciplinary fields, as to its operation and the population of inmates that it added during its period of operation (1924 - 1974). In the context of gender discussions, this research note aims to present a preliminary analysis of the observation sheets of the institution's male inmates who had evidence of hospitalization due to work-related illness or homosexuality. The confrontation of the masculine ideal present between the years of 1930 and 1945, in a context of social hygiene and of a construction of the model of masculinity that would characterize the Government of Getúlio Vargas. Under the mark of a still partial analysis, we will present the difficulties of the research and the specificities of the work with material of medical origin, besides pointing out how the hygienist science influenced on the male gender model established in this period and the concomitant exclusion of those who deviated this model.
