Resumo: | In 1927, the murder of two youths on Ribeiro Island, near Estrada da Tijuca, would mark the history of Brazilian criminal justice. Given the similar characteristics of the two crimes, which occurred within a few days, the police set up an investigation into a suspect: Febrón Índio do Brasil. What is most interesting in this case is that what was at stake was not the person of Febronio, but the social rules and doctrines that formed the complex relationship between legal and medical sciences in Brazil at that time. In this sense, the history of Febrônio Índio do Brasil allows us to think not only about the relationship between crime and insanity, but above all, the place assumed by mental medicine in Brazilian criminal justice at that time. |
