The state of Amapá show up as a frontier for the capitalism development. The infrastructure implementation by the State has allowed the development of mining, agribusiness, the timber industry and the fishing industry. These activities are identified by the State as fundamental for the Amapá economic development, but they are extremely linked to the large capital accumulation, hence its classification as hegemonic. Therefore, the aim of this article is to present the limits of the hegemonic development model and the alternatives and resistance of traditional peoples in Amapá. To this end, problems involving the hegemonic development project and the traditional peoples initiatives of resistance and way of life perpetuation were identified. As a result, it was possible to identify that the hegemonic project show up many contradictions and limitations imposed by the Amapá geographic and socioeconomic conditions. On the other hand, there are many traditional peoples initiatives that present themselves as an alternative to the hegemonic project for the economic development of Amapá. It is concluded that it is possible to establish an economic development model for Amapá that is socially fair and environmentally more appropriate to the state's socio-spatial dynamics, but this entails a change in the economic development paradigm adopted by the State.
